Ocean

In August Wilson's "Gem of the Ocean," the characters speak with reverence of "the light." They want injustice exposed in the light of day. They want to see their true selves in the light of honesty.

So it's a beautiful touch at Seminole State College's fine production, directed by Elizabeth Van Dyke, that the audience first sees the light from a lantern bobbing down a darkened staircase. It's a beacon in the night, and in this case it's summoning theatergoers to an emotional, absorbing evening.
